IUFRO 8.03.06 – Impact of Wind on Forests

7 th International Conference on Wind and Trees

Águas de São Pedro, Brazil; 3-8 August 2014

Call for Abstracts

The 7 th International Conference on Wind and Trees is to be held Águas de São Pedro, Brazil; 3-8 August 2014 . If you would like to present an oral or poster presentation in the conference, please submit your abstract to Dr. Jose Garcia (jngarcia@usp.br) by January 31, 2014. It is preferred that you send the abstract as a document attached to your email.

Please save your document in MicroSoft Word format. Other formats will be accepted but require more effort to evaluate and process. Preferred font is Times New Roman, 12 point. Please place the title (no more than 25 words) at the top of the abstract, followed by the authors (initials and then family names, as in M.A. Niklasson). If more than one author, each name should have a superscript number to link name to address. Follow names on a separate line with address: postal address or institution, city, state, country, email. Put each person’s address on a separate line. Please include your email addresses; participants in the conference often wish to contact authors later. A sample abstract (shortened) is given on the following page.

We ask that you limit the central text of your abstract to no more than 425 words. Latin names should be in italics or underlined. Major divisions within your abstract should be separated by a blank line. If necessary, a few literature citations are allowed by using a superscript number in the text (like this 1), accompanied by footnotes at the bottom of the abstract. These will be part of the word count for your abstract. Please use metric units for measurement. Bear in mind that readers of your abstract will be from diverse backgrounds: forestry, ecology, atmospheric sciences, arboriculture, physiology, etc; thus it is important to avoid terminology that may not be broadly known. After the main text of abstract, include 3-5 keywords.

Please indicate in your email whether you wish to present this orally or as a poster, and choose a first and second choice from among the following topics: biomechanics; physiology/acclimative growth; climatology; windthrow modeling; air flow/turbulence; ecology; urban/commercial/residential; storm impacts; silviculture/management. Submitted abstracts will be forwarded to the appropriate member of the scientific committee for evaluation of suitability for the conference. We will initially plan for 20-minute oral presentations (15 minutes talk, 5 minutes questions). Similarly, we hope that all presentations can be fit into the schedule without running parallel sessions; however, if a large number of good abstracts are submitted, we will consider a few parallel sessions.

Large windthrows in managed landscapes — possibilities for conservation.

Southern France and widespread areas of Switzerland were affected in February 2008 by winter storm “Jean”, which felled 82 million cubic meters of timber. This is equivalent to five years of harvest in the affected areas. The immediate concern was how to treat the damaged areas without having a large loss of timber value, and without insect attacks. Previous to this storm, there were no established policies for biodiversity and conservation in relation to large windthrows, although diversity of organisms living in dead trees had been recognized as a major concern of forestry.………
Keywords: storm impacts, salvage, windthrow
